star OneMind Dogs Coach
As a handler, Stephen strives to be as fair to his teammate as possible by applying handling techniques that provide the dog with the early information necessary to cue the intended line. Stephen loves the analytical aspect of agility as each course design presents unique challenges for each team. He believes that with an understanding of how dogs read handling cues, successful execution off any course design is achievable.
Nurturing each handler’s critical thinking is a primary goal of Stephen’s instruction. “By focusing on “WHY” instead of just “HOW” instructors can develop handlers who enjoy a deeper understanding of the sport of agility and how their dog is perceiving every interaction with them” he says.
Stephen finds it very rewarding to teach anything that helps handlers see agility from their dog’s perspective.
Stephen feels fortunate to embrace the challenge of working with both dogs and their human handlers, each with their own primary method of communication. Being part of developing their mutual understanding of each other is always an immensely satisfying experience for him.
